How to Design Hole Positions for Perler Bead Keychains

Hole placement is the “clever strength” step of bead charms. A good spot looks intentional when hung and survives swinging on a bag — a bad spot cracks on the first yank.

Golden spot: second-row center

Whether you punch later or leave a gap while building, the safest default is the middle of the second row from the top.

Never punch the first outer row — the rim snaps under load. Don’t go too deep (third/fourth row) either, or the piece hangs off-balance and the hardware covers the art.

Use natural tips and ears

If the top has a point (star tip, animal ear), punch at the second bead along that tip. The hole hides inside the outline and looks almost invisible.

Clear-bead ring / leave-a-gap holes

Skip one bead at the hang point, or surround the gap with 3–5 clear beads so ironing leaves a tidy built-in hole — often prettier than a post-punch.

Edges can melt shut; stuff a tiny rolled masking-tape ball in the gap while ironing to keep the opening.

Embedded jump ring (no visible hole)

Thread a matching-color bead onto an open jump ring, seat the ring gap inside that bead, then lay it along the top second row and iron normally.

The ring fuses into the piece — hidden and very strong when you refuse to cut the artwork.

Avoid skinny necks — reinforce load paths

Never hang from a one-bead-wide lamp cord or tiny neck — it tears. Widen the top by one or two beads, use the embedded-ring method, or add a structural stem through the design.

For daily-yank keychains, after punching you can “rebar” the hole with a tiny rivet / eyelet (about 4×8 mm). Slightly thicker, far tougher against ring stress.

Tool details that matter

Punch or poke from the back (pitted / hole face) toward the front so the exit edge is cleaner with fewer burrs.

No punch? Heat a pin in a lighter flame and melt-widen the hole — smoother than cold forcing and easier to fine-tune size.
