• Toxic feedstock: some ultra-cheap unlabeled beads use recycled ABS-like industrial scrap. Overheating can release irritating gases (often discussed as formaldehyde/styrene-type fumes)—short-term dizziness/nausea, worse with repeated closed-room exposure.
• Mains mini irons: the deadliest item. Children’s electrical toys are often limited to low voltage (e.g. ≤24V), yet kits ship 220V plug-in mini irons that can exceed 130°C in minutes with weak cutoffs—linked to shock, fire, and burns.
• Label games: sellers mark toys as “stationery” to dodge certification, print fake marks, omit factory details, or call the iron a “free gift” to duck responsibility.

Buying and use checklist

A short checklist beats doomscrolling.

• Read the resin: prefer packs that clearly say PE, EVA, or PP. Be suspicious of vague “eco material” with no polymer named.
• Check identity: under-14 toy positioning usually needs proper certification and a full maker address/standard line. Verify marks on the official national certification query site when shopping in China.
• Refuse 220V kit irons: kids can place beads; adults should fuse with a normal household iron + heat-safe sheet, or another low-voltage solution that actually meets toy rules.
• Smell and look: good beads have a mild plastic scent that fades with air. Throat-burning odor, eye sting, heavy white smoke when ironing, rough flash, black specks, or severe color bleed → stop and discard.

Keep windows open. Air finished pieces 3–7 days before long-term indoor storage.

If you receive unlabeled or fake-certified goods, keep receipts/packaging and report through local consumer channels (e.g. 12315 in China).
