Hard to Align Double-Sided Perler Ironing? Locator Beads & Sandwich Fusing
Beginners often fight alignment on two-sided fuses—melted beads lose friction and slip. The moves below make lining up much easier.

Locator-bead “mortise” joinery
This is the most reliable anti-shift approach—like 3D bead joinery: iron each face open-hole, peg reserved beads through both sides, then fuse no-hole.
- Reserve locator cells: on both faces, leave 2–3 bead gaps at matching key spots (edges, corners, or center) and set those beads aside.
- Iron open-hole on both sides first—don’t jump straight to no-hole; open-hole thickness seats the pegs better.
- Seat while warm (or reheat): drop locator beads into the holes and click the faces together like bricks.
- Final fuse: cover with ironing cloth and iron to a no-hole finish—joints disappear and stay locked.
Tape transfer + “sandwich” ironing
For normal double-sided flats (not 3D stacks), transfer quality and flip rhythm matter more than forcing alignment.
- Clean transfer: ~5 cm masking tape, burnish every bead; flip with one hand holding beads while the other peels the board slowly.
- Sandwich stack: dry towel under (holds heat) → beads → baking cloth → second baking cloth or specialty sheet on top.
- “Stir-fry” motion: glide front/back/side—no parked circles. Flip every ~10–15 seconds and let residual heat finish the melt so one face doesn’t overheat and slide.

Heat control and anti-warp details
Too hot and beads flow like jam—designs skew fast.
- Keep heat moderate: try about a half-step under melt (often ~150°C—tune to your beads/iron) with short passes.
- Fight curling edges: don’t rip cloth off instantly—wait until barely cool. If edges lift, alternate front→back→front while warm, or weight until cold.
- Check no-hole with a flashlight through the piece—glowing cells still have holes; re-iron those spots.
Align the pattern before you fuse
If front/back weren’t planned as mirrors or matched locators, joinery won’t save you. Print a clear chart, mark locator cells, then place.
