Fuse Beads Warped Like Potato Chips? Emergency Flatten + Prevention

Hours of placing, then a potato-chip curl. Thin pieces warp from uneven shrink: the hot face contracts while the back lags, or you skip the cool-down press. Rescue and prevention below.

Classic chip curl: center fused deeper than the rim, then cools into a dome.

Emergency flatten for already-curled pieces

Soften first, then press—never blast one spot until it melts.

  • Blow-dryer: highest heat/air, sweep across the bend (don’t park). When barely soft, parchment + flat weight until fully cool.
  • Kettle steam: hover over steam ~10+ seconds, or soft over hot water in a stainless bowl. Soft → towel dry → weight immediately. Steam only—never soak.
  • Reverse iron: back facing up under baking cloth, medium-low for a few seconds; move to glass/marble and book-press overnight.

The higher the rim lifts, the more you need soften→press—not dry bending.

Prevent the chip next time

A light second face + hot lock beats emergency surgery.

  • Always micro-iron both sides: one face almost guarantees curl. After the front, flip for ~5–8 light seconds.
  • Lock flat while hot: parchment on glass/tile/cutting board under heavy books; wait 15–30 minutes fully cool.
  • Steady peels: for tape or towel finishes, peel half-warm; pull the cloth, not the beads, so you don’t stretch the sheet.

Can’t flatten? Repurpose

Glue or magnet the piece to a rigid fridge-magnet / coaster backing so the base holds it flat—still a useful finish.
